AbstractWe present here the preliminary results of the analysis of two products of distinct sensors regarding land use evaluation: the Synthetic Aperture Radar of the European Remote Sensing Satellite and the Landsat Thematic Mapper. An area of 400 km2, located northwest from the town of Campinas, in Sao Paulo State, was used as test site. Within this site, there are different classes of land use, including urban areas, agriculture and forest. The TM and SAR scenes were acquired on 16th and the 25th of April 1992, respectively, during the dry season when there are no agriculture practices, so that no significant changes were supposed to happen during that 9 days period. A classical classification technique (MAXVER) were used on the data. The results show that TM is better suited for the purpose of this work. It is also suggested that eventually a coregistration of both products could provide new information relevant to land use discrimination. RESUMO: Este trabalho apresenta os resultados preliminares de uma análise comparativa entre produtos de dois sensores de natureza distinta para avaliação de classes de uso da terra: o Radar de Abertura Sintética do Satélite Europeu de Sensoriamento Remoto (SAR/ERS-1 e o mapeador temático do último satélite americano da série Landsat (TM/LANDSAT-5). A área teste é de 400 Km2 e localiza-se na porção noroeste do município de Campinas, SP. Esta área apresenta diferentes classes de uso da terra, compreendendo áreas urbanas, agrícolas, de florestas e silvicultura. As imagens TM e SAR foram adquiridas respectivamente nos dias 16 e 25 de abril, durante a estação seca e na qual tratos culturais praticamente inexistem, o que indica que mudanças temporais não teriam sido significativas. Foi realizada classificação automática do tipo Máxima Verosimilhança nas imagens digitais. Os resultados apontam melhores desempenhos para a classificação do uso da terra na imagem TM. Sugere-se a utilização da imagem SAR como uma nova banda, após o registro desta com a imagem TM.
